If there’s an error on your credit report, don’t panic, you can fix it. The best way is by sending a formal credit dispute letter to the credit bureau. Below, we’ve included ready-to-use templates and step-by-step instructions to help you take control of your credit.

Why You Need a Credit Dispute Letter

Errors on your credit report can hurt your credit score, make loans more expensive, or even stop you from getting approved at all. Common errors include:

  • Accounts that don’t belong to you
  • Incorrect payment history
  • Duplicate debts
  • Outdated information
  • Identity theft-related entries

You have the legal right to dispute any inaccurate or unverifiable item under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). When you send a dispute letter, the credit bureau must investigate and correct any legitimate error within 30 days. Learn more about your FCRA rights here.

What to Include in a Dispute Letter

Before you copy any template, make sure your letter contains:

  • Your full name and current address
  • A copy of your government-issued ID and utility bill

  • A clear explanation of what’s wrong
  • What you want them to do (e.g., remove the item)
  • Copies (not originals) of supporting documents

Tip: Send your letter by certified mail so you have proof it was received.

Online vs. Mail Disputes: Which Is Better?

Method Pros Cons
Mail Formal record, allows attachments Slower response
Online Fast, easy to submit Limited space for explanation

For serious disputes involving fraud, we recommend sending a physical letter for legal documentation purposes.

After You Submit: What Happens Next?

  • The credit bureau must investigate within 30 days.
  • They’ll contact the furnisher (lender) to verify the info.
  • If the furnisher doesn’t respond or can’t verify, the item is removed.
  • You’ll receive a written response with results and a free updated credit report.

If the item is corrected, check all three credit reports to ensure it’s removed from each one.

What If the Dispute Is Rejected?

If your dispute is denied:

  1. Submit new evidence and refile the dispute.
  2. Contact the lender directly and request correction.
  3. File a complaint with the CFPB. Submit a complaint here.
