Step 3: Gather Evidence Before Disputing
When you find an error, collect documents to support your claim. Evidence may include:
- Bank statements
- Payment confirmations
- Letters from creditors
- Canceled checks
- ID documents (to fix personal info errors)
The more proof you provide, the stronger your dispute will be.
Step 4: File a Dispute with the Credit Bureau
Each bureau lets you dispute errors online, by mail, or by phone. Online is fastest, but certified mail gives you a paper trail.

- Equifax Dispute Portal: Equifax Dispute
- Experian Dispute Center: Experian Dispute
- TransUnion Dispute Service: TransUnion Dispute
When filing, include:
- A clear explanation of the error.
- Copies (not originals) of supporting documents.
- A copy of your report with the disputed item highlighted.
By law, the bureau must investigate within 30 days and inform you of the results.
Step 5: Contact the Creditor Directly
Sometimes it helps to also dispute the error with the furnisher (the company that reported the info, like a bank or credit card issuer). Send them the same documentation you gave the bureau.

If the creditor agrees it’s wrong, they’ll correct their records and notify all three bureaus.
